2016 year in review

1. What did you do in 2016 that you’d never done before?

I don’t recall the exact date but I know that it was in late August that I was told the office would have to move by the new owners of the building the doctors office I work for were in.  The office had been in the same spot for 12 years the whole prospect of moving was overwhelming to say the least.

I am still pretty damn horrified by how many people were fooled by Trump’s BS.

25. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
We are all of us in the gutter, some of us are looking at the stars

1. What did you do in 2014 that you’d never done before?
Went to Massachusetts & stayed in a hotel instead of with Family. Although of course, I had Cam, Lois & Av with me in the hotel.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I made a sort-of resolution to start wearing earrings daily again. While working at Dish, with a headset on my head all the time I was there, earrings were painful, I spend a lot of my free time making beaded earrings & it occurred to me that I ought to wear them since I don’t have to wear a headset daily.
This year, I’m planning to try to start wearing mascara daily again. My eyelashes are so light that my eyes disappear into my face with out mascara & I’d like to not look so washed out all the time.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope, still not a grandmother at 46 & that’s quite all right with me!
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nope, not this year.
5. What countries did you visit?
No other countries, just Massachusetts for 4 days in July
6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?
Again, more money
7. What dates from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Nothing specific, obviously going to Massachusetts for a few days with the kids was awesome, all the holidays & multiple weekends visiting Lois & Av or having them over to our house were great. Labor Day weekend we put up the huge bookshelves that were my mothers & the main reason we took the trip to Mass. in the first place.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Work is getting smoother, we haven’t had a single week where we had to wait to cash our paychecks until there was money in the bank!
There is also the fact that I refinanced my house, decreased my mortgage payment by over $130. per month.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I’m not sure that there is anything specific, I did lose some weight, but I would have liked to lose more, we’re doing ok at work financially (which is the main focus of my job) but I would still have liked for us to do better.
10. What was the best thing you bought?
Nothing specific, I still have my house. So that’s good
11. Whose behavior merited celebration?
For the first semester of his Sophomore year at school, Cameron got all A’s & B’s in 2 out of 3 marking periods!
12. Whose behavior made you appalled and disgusted?
Politicians
13. What song will always remind you of 2014
Demons by Imagine Dragons.
14. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Gotten my Earrings out there in the public to be seen/purchased
15. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Worrying
16. Did you fall in love in 2014?
Nope.
17. What was your favorite TV program?
Sons of Anarchy, or maybe the new Outlander series on Starz.
18. What was the best book you read?
Written in My Own Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon (Part of the Outlander series)
19. What one thing would have made your year measurably more satisfying?
Money again!
20. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014
Warm when it’s cold. Cool when it’s hot.
21. What kept you sane?
Who said I was sane?
22. Who did you miss?
Still Eric.
23. Who was the best new person you met?
Other than patients at work, I haven’t really met or gotten to know anyone really.
24. Tell us a valuable lesson you learned in 2014
I think I knew this one before, but I’ve had to put it into practice more this year than in past years.  You can’t always tell what people are going through in their own lives which causes them to act-react the way they do & so you have to sometimes cut them some slack even when they’re rude, unprofessional or mean for no obvious reason.
25. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Don’t mean to let you down, but I am Hell-Bound.

2013 The Year in Review

1. What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before?
Lots of things, most relating to my job, I’ve learned a lot “on the fly” about medical billing, finances, payroll & multiple computer programs, all of which is useful knowledge.
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Well I had said I would blog again more, that didn’t happen, the healthier thing, well I certainly feel better than I did last year, but I haven’t lost any weight so in the eyes of most, I’m not any healthier
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No one specifically close to me did but through work I see a few tiny babies occasionally now, which is always fun.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
yes, a friend of 20+ years died in August, I’m ok with it but his loss has popped out at me in a lot of weird ways since then.
5. What countries did you visit?
No other countries, I did leave Virginia, but only to go to North Carolina & pick my mother up at the airport in Charlotte, then to take her back there a week later after her visit in August, (the friend who died, did so while my mother was here which made for a very weird week in general)
6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
Money again.
7. What dates from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
August 3 when Eric died, and the next day at Lois & Av’s for a cook out, with friends & family who knew Eric, plus my mother being there, that day was especially surreal. Also the holidays were memorable this year with Lois, Av & Cam of course.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I don’t think I really had one, maybe managing all the new challenges at the new job without losing my mind?
9. What was your biggest failure?
I do wish the job was going better, a small family practice Dr’s office is a hard business to run in this day & age.
10. What was the best thing you bought?
I like  my new smart phone better than my old one, it was free with my bonus points from U. S. Cellular though, so I didn’t exactly buy it.
11. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I’m very proud that Cameron (now 14) did the school marching and concert band all through the fall very well.
12. Whose behavior made you appalled and disgusted?
Congress and especially the congressman for my own district Morgan Griffith of VA I truly hope 2014 is the year we get rid of the do-nothing obstructionists.
13. What song will always remind you of 2013
pfffttt….. “What does the Fox Say” lol.
14. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Read, received money
15. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Take verbal abuse, wait.
16. Did you fall in love in 2013?
Nope.
17. What was your favorite TV program?
Sons of Anarchy
18. What was the best book you read?
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness (also loved the second book in the series & am awaiting the third & final book this year)
19. What one thing would have made your year measurably more satisfying?
financial solvency
20. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012
I tried to balance the teal, blue, green trend I’ve been on for a few years with a bit more purple.
21. What kept you sane?
Melatonin, at the least, no matter what chaos was going on, at home, at work, in the world around me, at least I could guarantee myself a good nights sleep every night.
22. Who did you miss?
Eric who died in August, and sort of because of his death, my father more, they were both Capricorns & when I missed my father I would often talk to Eric because he was analytical & thought about interesting, abstract concepts like my father did. Now I don’t really have anyone like that to talk to in my life (Lois’ boyfriend Av’s dad is similar, but I’m a little intimidated by him still)
23. Who was the best new person you met?
I like Cameron’s newest & closest friend’s mom pretty well. We share a Sons of Anarchy obsession so that’s something.
24. Tell us a valuable lesson you learned in 2013
Keep your friends close because you never know when you’ll see them again.
25. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫ I got nothin’

2012 The Year in Review

Ok, so I know I don’t write on this blog much at all anymore, I felt it had become a litany of all which was wrong with my life in past years & had abandoned it as a bad idea because it wasn’t really going anywhere. I’m going to try to start writing here again in the next few months and I thought a 2012 year in review would be as good a place as any to start.

1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?
Spent time in the Hospital & was very sick & weak.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I had no resolutions in 2012, I was barely conscious at the beginning of the year.
My only resolutions are about trying to get healthier & maybe blogging a little more.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope, still not a grannie at 44.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No deaths to report this year either.

5. What countries did you visit?
I didn’t even leave the state of VA in 2012.

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
Money and a vehicle which works well.

7. What dates from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
October 15 2012 is the day my job @ Dish ended. I haven’t missed it in the least since I’ve been gone although I do wish I could have continued at that rate of pay.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I’m excited that I found a new job in less than a week, but I know that was more about coincidence & being in the right place at the right time than any skill or achievement on my part.
I am happy that I haven’t ended up back in the hospital or seriously ill again though.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I found out in July that I’m borderline Diabetic now & I’ve done poorly at controlling that by my own estimation.

10. What was the best thing you bought?
I found out at the last minute that my medical bills could be claimed on my taxes & so got an unexpectedly large tax refund in early April & I replaced both my kitchen stove & washing machine, both of which have been absolutely awesome to have & use this year!

11. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I don’t really know. Lois & Av have been somewhat helpful but it’s not often done with good cheer on Lois’ part. Cam & I go back & forth between loving & hating one another, he being 13 now has changed a lot of things, including him going to rage more often & being a lot lazier & less willing to be helpful around the house or even pick up after himself.

12. Whose behavior made you appalled and disgusted?
The perpetrator of the Newtown CT school shootings, IDK his name & refuse to learn it.

13. What song will always remind you of 2012
Funny how the songs which occur to me aren’t songs from the actual year. This year would probably be “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald or If You Could Read My Mind” both sung by Gordon Lightfoot. IDK why but I’ve been obsessed with both songs for months.

14. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Saved money while I was making nearly $20. per hour.

15. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Felt physically ill, weak & exhausted.

16. Did you fall in love in 2012?
Har de har har.

17. What was your favorite TV program?
I think I stopped blogging regularly right around the time I became obsessed with Sons of Anarchy but that one has to win hands down for what would be (If I’d been keeping up with the blog) the 4th year straight.

18. What was the best book you read?
Ananzi Boys by Neil Gaiman.
I went on a serious Gaiman kick this year & this is the book (albeit on CD initially) that started me on that kick.

19. What one thing would have made your year measurably more satisfying?
If when they finally fired me @ Dish I hadn’t been so completely overwhelmed that it was actually happening after 11 years & 3 months, and I had been able to yell something obnoxious on my way out of the building or say something about my boss’ hypocrisy.

20. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012
1. it fits
2. Warm when it’s cold
3. Cool when it’s hot

21. What kept you sane?
my smart phone, isn’t that sad?

22. Who did you miss?
Both my 16 year old who lives with her dad out of state & my grandmother, deceased 6 years now.

23. Who was the best new person you met?
I did Jury duty the week after I was fired & I met quite a few very nice people there, the new job hasn’t exactly yielded any new friends as I was fairly well acquainted with the people who worked there already as I’ve been seeing this same doctor for 12 or 13 years.

24. Tell us a valuable lesson you learned in 2012
The Only constant is change, embrace it and go with the flow, it’s much easier than railing & fighting against it. When the universe says change, just go with it.

25. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
What a tale my thoughts would tell.

My99. Part 4- 24-1

We are getting down to it now. I didn’t think it would be so hard to do this- of course I decided to make it historical & put a comment on every song. I didn’t really consider how hard it might be to share some of these memories. So if it seems like I’m obfuscating or not elaborating like I did before- you’ll just have to accept it.

24. Bittersweet Symphony~ The Verve Pipe- 1998- The song at the end of the movies Cruel Intentions. Which of course is a modern day retelling of Dangerous Liaisons & a fairly sad story. I saw this movie with the ex about 2 months before we ended our marriage & then found out later it was what he used to seduce the girl he left me for & that they considered it ‘their’ movie. Which was painful- considering I’d heard something very similar from him after we watched it together (I wasn’t mean enough to tell the new GF that though- more fool I)

23. Ride On ~ Ac/Dc – 1976- ‘I got patches on the patches of my old blue jeans- well they used to be blue- when they used to be new- when they used to be clean’ A song about hitchhiking which I did a lot of as a teenager & young adult. Also when I was a teenager my mother & I played that game where she wouldn’t buy me any new clothes until I lost weight & I refused to lose weight ‘for’ her & so wore holey jeans which I was constantly patching so the lyrics resonate.

22. Wish you Were Here ~ Pink Floyd – 1975- Ahem- I had a crush on someone who wasn’t there for a ridiculously long time & this song still makes me think of him.

21. Tangled up in Blue ~ Bob Dylan – 1975-Well of course there’s that line about wondering if her hair was still red. Mostly though this one makes me think of my uncle who is a huge Dylan fan. He was 18 when I was born & baby sat my brother & I fairly often when we were young. In turn as a teenager living with him & his family & then later living with my grandmother I took care of his kids a lot. The first time I ever conciously heard this song was a time early in my years living with my grandmother. My uncle’s family went on vacation & I stayed at their house & house-sat for them (this would have been late spring in 1988). The first night there I went to use his stereo (my first access ever to a 6 disc cd changer) I put it on shuffle turned all the speakers on (he had them wired throughout the whole house) & went to the kitchen to prepare dinner (huge- lovely victorian house! I could write a whole post on the glories of that house- of course no one but me would ever read it) This song was the first song to pour from the speakers- I’ve loved it ever since.

20. Subdivisions ~ Rush-1982– The song that got me into Rush. I remember listening to it on WCOZ. I liked it better than the song from the same album which gained the majority of radio play – New World Man. My brother & I bought the album (one each- we did not share well with one another) a few weeks later. In spite of our divergent tastes over the years Rush was one band my brother & I could always agree on. Seeing them at the Fleet center (yes- I know it’s not called that any longer) in 1997 is still one of the concert going highlights of my life.

19. Voodoo ~ Godsmack – 1999– I swear I never heard this song until 2000- late 2000 at that- I suppose I  shouldn’t broadcast my out of it-ness but it was a weird time for me. Knowing my marriage was effectively over in my heart- but not wanting to deal with it or the pain & torture my ex was heaping on me. This song for whatever reason- is one which was very comforting to me during our separation & in the many months while we were taking care of the divorce long distance.

18. South Central Rain (I’m Sorry) ~ R.E.M. 1984– Remember when Michael Stipe had hair? REM was one of the bands my brother & I both liked up until the end of his life- this song makes me think of him.

17. In The End ~ Linkin Park- 2001-See Voodoo- except that I know I was hearing this song in November 2000- when everything I can find suggests it didn’t come out until 2001. It was also very comforting to me during my separation & divorce- of course- with those lyrics– how could it not be: “I tried so hard & got so far & in the end it doesn’t even matter” they completely sum up my marriage in retrospect.

16. Tonight Tonight ~ Smashing Pumpkins- 1996– I just like the sound of this song- the 1900’s video helps too- I’m a sucker for that particular time & look.

15. Outshined ~ Soundgarden-1991– I never realized that this song & the one below were recorded so far apart in time. I always think of the two of them as a piece- I love them both. I can totally understand that line about looking California & feeling Minnesota  in this song but I think the #1 reason I love this song is it’s one I can sing along to really well! (ahem- in the car with no witnesses that is)

14. I Stay Away ~ Alice in Chains – 1994– This song is beautiful & for a long time summed up my feelings about almost the whole world- up until last year that is- now I’m pretty much back to considering all but the select few people I know well & online friends the only trustworthy people in the world & I stay away from the rest.

13. Take a Picture ~ Filter- 2000-I don’t know exactly why I love this song so much – but it’s a pretty one & I like the end where he seems to be ranting about his father’s  opinion of him. I do often think of what my father would think of me now especially since I am nowhere near his opinion of physical beauty- I at least didn’t go all Badlands like he predicted I would.

12. Miss You ~ Blink 182- 2003- In researching exactly what year it was  I was hearing this song- I found out that although this song was nowhere near Blink 182’s highest chart topper it went platinum anyway because of the cult following.

11. Love Alive ~ Heart- 1977- Umm this is a song which 18’s real dad liked a lot- I absorbed his liking for it & it makes me think of him still- luckily I don’t have it on mp3 & I no longer have a tape deck.

10. Time After Time ~ Ozzy Osbourne- 1991- Probably my favorite Ozzy song. Although You Can’t Kill Rock & Roll & I Just Want You are biggies in my book too. For all his faults & mumbling he’s a pretty great lyricist. (I never watched the Osbournes on MTV just in case anyone was wondering- I prefer to think of him as the prince of darkness thank you very much)

09. One Thing ~ Finger Eleven -2003- I like this one a lot- nice sentiment.

08. Gold Dust Woman~ Fleetwood Mac-1977- This song makes me think of Chrissie- “pick your path & I’ll pray” indeed!

07. November Rain ~ Guns & Roses -1992- It would seem that there’s a Guns & Roses song for every relationship I’ve had. This was the ex’s & my song (though it wasn’t our wedding song- it should have been) I especially think of learning to play it on the piano.

06. Far Away ~ The Offspring – 1997- death- how he’d trade if he could- pretty much how I feel about my brother.

05. Over the Hills & Far Away ~ Led Zeppelin- 1973- This is such a pretty song & I had a thing as a teenager where my day was not complete if I didn’t hear it. I did a lot of walking back then & my walkman radio was my constant companion especially when I was walking to work in the rain I would hear this particular song- so often that I think of gray rainy days when I hear it to this day.

04. Under Pressure ~ Queen & David Bowie-1981- this particular song has enjoyed a resurgence in my life just recently- probably because of the pressured lifestyle I’m leading – much to my annoyance.

03. –Sugar Mountain ~ Neil Young- 1965- This song became Virginia for me- I was here at 19 & didn’t really fit in anywhere- there were all the hippie types with their kids & their concerns & there were all the kids- but almost none of them were anywhere near my age- “you can’t be 20 on sugar mountain- although it seems that you’re leaving there too soon” So I left & came back & left & came back again before I felt like I could stay forever. (I admit though- guilt over my mother’s age & no one to take care of her- does sometimes make me feel like I should go back to MA- since my mother refuses to come here to VA)
